Apply for our 2026 ECR prizes

The British Society for Neuroendocrinology provides a yearly platform to recognise outstanding up-and-coming scientists in the society through its two prizes: The Julia Buckingham Award for undergraduates and postgraduates and the Michael Harbuz Prize for postdoctoral scientists. Winners of both prizes will be invited to give an in-person talk at the Early Career Researcher Meeting, Neuroendo Celebrate 2026, in Manchester, on 2-3 September 2026.

Julia Buckingham Award

Named to honour Professor Julia Buckingham, a former editor of the Journal of Neuroendocrinology, in recognition of her commitment to supporting early career researchers, this award recognises the achievement and potential of up-and-coming scientists.

If you have an outstanding early career researcher in your team or lab, please encourage them to apply.

Award winners get:

  • 15-minute lecture at Neuroendo Celebrate 2026
  • £375 prize money
  • 1-year membership to the BSN   

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate students (up to one year post PhD viva prior to meeting; any breaks will be taken into consideration)
  • Have been a member of the British Society for Neuroendocrinology for more than 6 months
  • Prepare an abstract and be available to give an oral presentation at this year's Early Career Researcher Meeting, Neuroendo Celebrate 2026

We highly encourage eligible members to apply. You can submit your application along with your abstract for this year's Early Career Researcher Meeting, Neuroendo Celebrate 2026, by uploading a single PDF document that includes:

  • Abstract following guidelines
  • Curriculum Vitae (résumé)
  • Year of study, date of viva
  • One page cover letter consisting of research interests, achievements and contribution to the field of neuroendocrinology
  • Two full reference letters (one should be a member of the society)
  • Optional - any publications (preprints, abstracts submitted to conferences (internal and external)

Michael Harbuz Prize

Every year, to honour the memory and contribution to neuroendocrinology of Dr Michael Harbuz, the British Society for Neuroendocrinology (BSN) provides a platform for an outstanding member of the emerging generation of neuroendocrinologists at its meetings with the Michael Harbuz Prize.

If you have an outstanding emerging researcher in your team or lab, please encourage them to apply.

Award winners get:

  • 30-minute lecture
  • Publication for the ‘Early Career Perspective’ for the Journal of Neuroendocrinology
  • £750 prize money
  • 1-year membership to the BSN   

Eligibility:

  • Have completed their PhD within 10 working years prior to the meeting (any breaks will be taken into consideration).
  • Have been a member of the British Society for Neuroendocrinology for more than 6 months
  • Prepare an abstract and be available to give an oral presentation online
